What is La Poste (Colissimo)?

Colissimo is the tracked parcel service of La Poste, the national postal operator of France. It covers parcels sent within metropolitan France and Monaco, to the French overseas departments, and to international destinations, with delivery to the door, to a pickup point or to a locker depending on the option the sender chose. La Poste publishes Colissimo as its standard parcel offer, separate from Chronopost, its express subsidiary, and separate from ordinary tracked letter mail.

If a French store shipped your order, Colissimo is the service most likely to be on it. La Poste itself makes the final delivery inside France, so the last events on a Colissimo number come from a French delivery office rather than from a partner. For a parcel arriving from abroad, La Poste usually only takes over for the French leg, which is why the first scans on such an item may come from the postal operator in the sending country.

Ships for: French online retailers shipping within France, Sellers shipping from France to Europe and the rest of the world, Marketplace sellers whose parcels enter France through the postal network

Tracking number format: 13 characters: one digit, one letter, then 11 digits (Colissimo within France and the overseas departments) (e.g. 8D00432154789); For items crossing a border, the international postal format is often used instead: two letters, nine digits and a two-letter country code such as FR

Typical delivery time: La Poste states a Colissimo delivery time of 48 hours, meaning 2 business days, within metropolitan France and Monaco. For the overseas departments it gives 5 to 7 days for Colissimo OM and up to 22 business days for Colissimo Eco OM, and for international destinations 3 to 15 business days depending on the destination and the option chosen. These figures exclude time spent in customs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Colissimo tracking number look like?

A Colissimo number sent within France or to the overseas departments is 13 characters long and starts with a digit, followed by one letter and then 11 more digits, for example 8D00432154789. La Poste documents this format on its own help pages, and it is by far the most common shape among Colissimo parcels checked on the 24hTrack platform. Parcels crossing a border often carry the international postal format instead: two letters, nine digits and a two-letter country code, ending in FR for an item posted in France.

How long does Colissimo take to deliver?

La Poste gives 48 hours, meaning 2 business days, for Colissimo within metropolitan France and Monaco. For the overseas departments it publishes 5 to 7 days for Colissimo OM and up to 22 business days for the Eco option, and for international destinations 3 to 15 business days depending on where the parcel is going and which offer the sender chose. Those windows exclude customs processing, and they start when the parcel is actually handed to La Poste rather than when you placed the order.

Why is my Colissimo tracking not updating?

A quiet period is normal at two points in the journey. The first is right after the seller creates the label: the number exists but nothing is recorded until La Poste physically takes the parcel in. The second is while a parcel crosses a border, where it can go silent through the outbound flight and customs before the destination network picks it up again. Inside France, a gap of more than a few business days past the stated 2-day window is the point at which it is worth going back to the sender, who is La Poste's customer for that shipment.

What is the difference between La Poste and Colissimo?

La Poste is the postal operator; Colissimo is one of its services. A Colissimo number is therefore a La Poste number, which is why searching for either name leads to the same parcel. La Poste also runs tracked letter products and owns Chronopost for express delivery, and those use different services and different number formats, so a number that does not behave like a Colissimo may simply belong to one of them.

Can I follow a Colissimo parcel sent to another country?

Yes. An international Colissimo keeps one number for the whole journey, but the events change hands: La Poste records the French leg, then the postal operator in the destination country records arrival, customs and delivery. That handover is where tracking most often appears to stall, because the two networks do not report at the same pace. Paste the number on the 24hTrack platform and the events from both legs are shown together in one timeline.

My Colissimo says delivered but I have not received it. What should I do?

First check whether the option used was delivery to a pickup point or a locker rather than to your door, since those are marked delivered once the parcel reaches the collection point and you still have to go and collect it. Then check with anyone else at the address and with immediate neighbours. If it still has not turned up, contact the sender: they hold the contract with La Poste for that shipment and are the party who can open a claim and arrange a replacement or a refund.
